Know Your College – BITS PILANI – Meet Parikh
Okay. So, before you hear me blabber for some 2000 odd words, let me introduce myself. Hey there, fellas! How’s it going? My name is Meet Parikh, an Electronics and Instrumentation undergrad and I have completed 2 years of my stay at this godforsaken place which is literally in-the-middle-of-nowhere. Where, you ask? Let me tell you a little about BITS Pilani.
‘353/450’ flashed the screen and a sigh escaped the lips of the tired soldier. The war was over and he had emerged victorious. His eyes were weary and red, demanding rest but not anymore. Reality had just dawned upon him and out he ran to reunite with his family with just two words on his mind. BITS Pilani. What followed were 2 months of explaining the relatives why I chose to go for a private college and that too away from home and whether I had failed to secure a seat in Nirma or L.D. or DAIICT. I had watched every damn you-tube video with the words ‘BITS Pilani’ in its title. Soon, my admission there got confirmed and then it dawned upon me. I was going to leave my house for the first time to stay in a hostel, with strangers, some odd 800 km away from home in a desert. Shit just got real. This lead to a period of confusion, fear and excitement which lasted till I heard my phone go ‘You have arrived at your destination’ and there I was. I can’t create a word-picture of what I felt when I saw that path go far, deep inside the university campus, sprawling with my future batch-mates, all pacing up and down the road, preparing themselves for their stay on this beautiful campus. 2 years since that day and I have never regretted my decision.
BITS Pilani has enjoyed its status as a premiere engineering institute at-par to the IITs. In my opinion, credit for this goes to the no-reservation policy. Yes, you heard it right. We have a 100% merit based admission process. So, either clear the BITSAT or work hard and become a board topper. BITS also has a great faculty team to provide able guidance for the implementation of crazy ideas we might come up with. The professors are easily approachable and are always up for discussions on latest technologies. More so, many BITSians can be seen working on projects under their guidance. BITS has a continuous evaluation system and that does keep us busy. But it also helps us keep up with the courses so that we don’t study concepts for the sake of them, one night before the exams. Grading is tough since all the students are admitted on the basis of merit and that makes the competition a whole lot fierce. This trains us though for bigger competitions and I totally feel this would help a great deal, once we graduate. As for infrastructure, the institute is quite old. But BITS is undergoing Project Parivartan which involves renovation of hostels, academic buildings, labs etc. The New Academic Building (NAB) is ready now and it is a sight to behold. NAB is fully air-conditioned and has numerous computer labs for student use. The lab courses provide a great insight in the concepts we learn in class. We have a huge library which has enriched itself with bundles of knowledge over the years. We have 6 lecture theaters which have a seating capacity of over 400 students.
BITS is also considered the best private institute for overall development. So much so that the institute cares about the involvement of its students in extra-curricular and to support that, we have a 0% attendance policy. This specially helps us to commit to tasks apart from acads. Most BITSians use this power to develop other skills like programming, debating, preparing for exams like GRE, CAT etc, playing a music instrument, etc. So yeah. We are not just nerds with their heads dug deep inside books. There are clubs on campus for almost every extra-curricular activity you can think of, be it sports, music, dance, debating, art, coding etc. Apart from that, we also have technical clubs like Robocon, FS, BAJA, Team Anant, Hyperloop India, Acyut etc. Team Anant is a team working to build a nano-satellite. Acyut builds humanoid robots. Hyperloop India, formerly BITS Hyperloop, was the only Indian team to be selected for the prestigious pod competition organized by Elon Musk’s Hyperloop. The senior-junior bond is unbelievable here. You can approach any senior for advice without hesitation and I can bet big bucks that he/she will definitely guide you.
BITS organizes 3 fests throughout the year : BOSM, Oasis and APOGEE. All the 3 fests are totally student-run. Oasis is also considered the 2nd largest cultural fest of India. We have departments of Controlz, Art Design and Publicity, Sponz, Live Events, etc which look towards smooth execution of the fests. Sports hasn’t suffered a setback either. We have a Student Activity Centre for badminton, table tennis, gymming etc and the Gym Grounds for cricket, athletics, football, hockey, volleyball etc. The campus life is happening and energetic. There are always workshops, seminars, talks happening on various parts of the campus. Apart from all these activities, there are a lot of hangout places on campus. Rotunda, Skylab, FoodKing and ANC(at night) are famous hangout places.
Woah! There’s still a lot I haven’t told you guys. But why take away the magic of mystery from this place I so dearly love? It’s a matter of pride for me that I got the opportunity of studying at such a premiere institute, among such smart and helping people. BITS has changed me as a person for good and I am eternally in debt of this place, these people. Come, experience the magic for yourself!
BITS Pilani! It’s magic!
